Canadian Twins Break World Record: A Miracle Journey of Survival

Adiah and Adrial Nadarajah, born in Toronto on March 4, 2022, have made history as the world’s earliest surviving twins, officially recognized by Guinness World Records. The twins arrived a staggering 126 days too soon, defying all odds and expectations. Born at just 21 weeks and 5 days, their early birth came as a shock to their parents, Shakina Rajendram and her husband, who were initially told that their babies had little to no chance of survival. But what followed was nothing short of a miracle.
When Shakina went into labor, doctors feared that the twins would not survive due to their extreme prematurity. Yet, thanks to the quick decision to transfer Shakina to Mount Sinai Hospital and the outstanding care provided by the medical team, both babies were delivered just past the 22-week mark, each weighing less than one pound — a weight that typically is not compatible with life. The odds were stacked against them, but the Nadarajah twins showed a fierce will to survive.
For months, Adiah and Adrial fought for their lives in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where they faced countless hurdles. Their tiny, fragile bodies were constantly monitored, with doctors and nurses working tirelessly to keep them alive. The twins underwent numerous treatments and were constantly battling complications as they grew stronger. The road to survival was a rocky one, with each day a small victory.
Despite the harsh reality of their early birth, the twins’ progress was nothing short of extraordinary. After five long months of fighting for their lives, the moment finally arrived when they were able to leave the hospital, tube-free and breathing and eating on their own. It was a moment of joy and relief for their parents, who had been by their side throughout this long and exhausting journey.
Today, Adiah and Adrial are thriving and proving just how resilient the human spirit can be. Adiah is a happy, joyful little girl who “smiles all day,” bringing light to everyone around her with her infectious energy. Meanwhile, Adrial continues to make remarkable strides in his recovery, showing his strength and courage as he overcomes the challenges of premature birth.
Their miraculous survival has not only made them the world’s earliest surviving twins, surpassing the previous record set in 2018 by twins Keeley and Kambry Ewoldt from Iowa, but it also serves as a testament to the power of love, faith, and resilience. The Nadarajah twins’ story is one of hope and determination, a story that will inspire families and medical professionals alike.
This extraordinary journey of survival highlights the incredible advances in neonatal care, but more importantly, it shows the strength of the human will. Through the love and support of their parents and the dedication of the medical team, Adiah and Adrial have proven that miracles can, indeed, happen. Today, they are not just record holders — they are living, breathing symbols of perseverance and the miracles that can unfold when science, love, and hope come together.
