Working with Robert Redford: Memories of “The Horse Whisperer”

In the summer of 1997, I had the great honor of working as the choreographer for Robert Redford’s film The Horse Whisperer. At the time, I was living in Montana, where the film was being shot. Working with Bob was a true joy. He was open, gracious, kind, attentive, eager to learn, and always fun to work with, creating an amazing atmosphere on set.
My role involved coaching Bob and Kristen Scott Thomas in their pivotal dance scene, alongside a group of local extras. What stood out most, though, was watching Bob interact with the horse trainers, learning how to handle a troubled horse. Together, we explored the physicality of his character and how it would affect his relationship with Kristen’s character and their dance. Bob was always willing to dig deep into the nuances of his role.
Even to this day, I hold a deep respect for his work ethic and dedication. After our work on the film, we crossed paths several times, and Bob was always generous enough to stop and say hello, remembering our time together. It was an honor to work with him, and he gave so much to all of us. Rest in peace, Robert Redford. Thank you.
